STOA workshop - Humanities and social sciences
On
3 February 2026 (15:00 CET), the STOA panel of the European Parliament will host the workshop “Humanities and social sciences at the heart of Europe’s future: Interdisciplinary approaches to global challenges”, taking place in Brussels and online. As negotiations on the next Horizon Europe Framework Programme advance, the workshop will discuss the need to move beyond purely technology- and competitiveness-driven approaches by better integrating social sciences and humanities (SSH) into EU research and innovation policies.
Information and Registration
STOA workshop's discussions will focus on how SSH can support the design and implementation of key initiatives such as the green transition, AI governance, healthcare and security, ensuring that research outcomes respond to citizen needs and democratic values. The event is also highly relevant for industry-related research under Horizon Europe Cluster 4 – Digital, Industry and Space, where proposals increasingly need to demonstrate human-centric innovation, societal impact, skills development and workforce considerations alongside technological excellence. The workshop will further examine tools such as the Social Progress Index and wellbeing dashboards as ways to inform research priorities and policy decisions.
